No âmbito da Porto Design Biennale 2019, e com o patrocínio da empresa vinícola Niepoort, esta mostra será a edição zero de um concurso de cartazes aberto ao público a partir do próximo ano. Comissariada por Francisco Providência apresenta uma seleção de 10 designers portugueses (André da Loba João Faria, João Machado, Maria Ferrand, Mariana a Miserável,Miguel Salazar, R2 (Lizá Ramalho + Artur Rebelo), Rui Costa, Serafim Mendes e Susana Fernando), que refletem um conjunto diversificado de linguagens contemporâneas. A exposição estará patente ao público no edifícioTerminal de Cruzeiros em Matosinhos.
Niepoort Spirit Exhibition - 10 Designers / 10 Posters’, 2019
In the context of Porto Design Biennale 2019, and sponsored by the wine company Niepoort, this show will be the zero edition of a poster competition that will be open to the public from next year. Nadir Afonso – A Geometria como Universo, 2019
Antecipando as comemorações do centenário do nascimento de Nadir Afonso (1920-2013), o Município de Chaves homenageia a memória e o seu legado artístico, divulgando, através de um livro, a sua doação, ao Museu da Região Flaviense, em 1982. A obra, com conceção gráfica de João Machado, compreende o estudo exaustivo das 15 obras doadas, textualizado por António Augusto Joel e fotografia de Fernando DC Ribeiro.
Nadir Afonso - Geometry as Universe, 2019
Anticipating the commemorations of the birth centenary of Nadir Afonso (1920-2013), the Municipality of Chaves honors the memory and its artistic legacy, disclosing, through a book, his donation to the Flaviense Museum in 1982. This work, with graphic design by João Machado, comprises the exhaustive study of the 15 donated works, textualized by António Augusto Joel and photography by Fernando DC Ribeiro.

‘A TOLERÃNCIA’ – Exposição itinerante de cartazes, 2019
"Tolerância" é o nome e o tema central de uma exposição itinerante de cartazes que está a acontecer em todo o mundo. A ideia foi lançada em 2017 pelo artista-designer bósnio Mirko Ilić (residente nos E.U.A) que através da arte do cartaz, faz um apelo universal à importância vital do significado da tolerância na sociedade humana. A ideia subjacente a este tema é espalhar uma mensagem de humanidade, de forma a chegar ao máximo de pessoas possível, exigindo o mínimo de infraestruturas para a sua concretização. Em lugar dos espaços dispendiosos e estilizados das tradicionais galerias de arte, esta exposição quer-se acessível a um público muito mais amplo, apresentando-se em centros comerciais, praças, parques, universidades, e outros locais de acesso gratuito.
Em Portugal, a exposição foi promovida pela Design Factory Aveiro - PCI . Creative Science Park Aveiro Region e a Universidade de Aveiro, em parceria com os Municípios de Aveiro, Águeda,Ílhavo e Oliveira de Azeméis. Trata-se de uma exposição intermunicipal, que decorre em paralelo em 4 cidedes: Aveiro, Águeda, Oliveira de Azeméis e Ílhavo.

Esta mostra promoveu em paralelo uma série de debates sobre o tema e um grande envolvimento com as comunidades (especialmente escolas) e contou com a contribuição de trabalhos de vários designers e artistas portugueses para esta coleção.
‘THE TOLERENCE TRAVELLING POSTER SHOW, 2019
"Tolerance" is the name and central theme of a traveling poster exhibition that is taking place around the world. The idea was launched in 2017 by Bosnian artist-designer Mirko Ilić (US resident) who through the poster art makes a universal appeal to the vital importance of the meaning of tolerance in human society. The idea behind this theme is to spread a message of humanity in order to reach as many people as possible, requiring as little infrastructure as possible to realize it. Instead of the expensive and stylized spaces of traditional art galleries, this exhibition is intended for a much wider audience, featuring in shopping malls, squares, parks, universities, and other free venues.
The University of Aveiro promoted the show, to set an intermunicipal exhibition occurring at the same time in 4 cities: Aveiro, Águeda, Oliveira de Azeméis and Ilhavo.
The programme included not only the exhibition but also debates, engagement with the communities (specially schools) and contributions from Portuguese Designers and Artists for the collection.

A impressionante fachada de traça neo-gótica, protagonizada pelas figuras pintadas da Arte e da Ciência, a imponente escadaria carmim, os baixos relevos do teto em gesso pintados e o fabuloso vitral que ostenta a divisa ‘Decus in Labore’, proporcionam ao visitante uma experiência única.
Foi neste contexto decorativo que João Machado se inspirou para efetivar uma linha de merchandise que se desenvolve a partir de duas temáticas figurativas distintas: O tema das pinturas da fachada - as figuras femininas representativas da Arte e da Ciência – e uma abordagem mais gráfica - o tema dos dois ‘L’s - que se entrelacam harmoniosamente, ‘destacando’ as iniciais do nome deste espaço centenário.

The impressive neo-Gothic façade, featuring the painted figures of Art and Science, the imposing crimson staircase, the low reliefs of the painted plaster ceiling and the fabulous stained glass that bears the 'Decus in Labore' border, give the visitor a unique experience.
It was in this decorative context that João Machado was inspired to create a line of merchandise that develops from two distinct figurative themes: The façade paintings - the representative female figures of Art and Science - and a more graphic approach - the theme of the two 'L's - which intertwine harmoniously,' highlighting 'the initials of the name of this centenary space.

Collective exhibition at Matosinhos Design House from May 10 to November 3, 2018. This is an extensive documentary show, bringing together instruments, machines, technologies and artifacts that illustrate the history of graphic production in Portugal, from printing in the time of the monarchy to the present time.
As part of this exhibition, a series of silkscreens by several artists were carried out, including a recent illustration by João Machado.

The iconic photographic cameras brand opens in Porto its first Portuguese Leica Store. Located in Rua Sá da Bandeira nº 48/52, the shop opens its doors to the public on the 1rst december. The opening of this shop in Porto takes on the mission of calling the attention of the international trade, as has recently been mentioned by The Times. The official catalogue of the Portuguese shop was designed by João Machado.

João Machado foi convidado para a 8ª edição da The 4th block International Triennial, que a cada três anos reúne em Kharkiv, a segunda maior cidade da Ucrânia, as últimas tendências e inovações no design de cartaz, este ano com um foco na comemoração dos 130 anos do nascimento de Sonia Delaunay, prestigiada pintora/designer ucraniano-francesa. Esta mostra foi organizada pela Izolyatsia, a Associação Ucraniana de Designers Gráficos 4th Block e o GRAFPROM Studio, contando com a participação de vários designers a nível mundial.

João Machado was invited for the 8th edition of The 4th Block International Triennial, that gathers in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, the latest tendencies and innovations in poster design, focusing this year in the celebration of the 130th anniversary of the birth of Sonia Delaunay, the renowned Ukrainian-French painter/designer. This show was organised by Izolyatsia, the Ukranian Association of Graphic Designers 4th Block and the GRAFPROM Studio, counting on the participation of several world designers.

In 2014 João Machado won the first prize of the ASIAGO International Award for Philatelic Art with a stamp developed under the International Year of Statistics.
Entre os Design Masters da Graphis, 2014
João Machado conquista uma vez mais várias das distinções da GRAPHIS reconhecidas internacionalmente, mas desta vez com uma novidade: em jeito de homenagem, e com cinco outros nomes grandes do design, é eleito como Mestre do Design. É ainda convidado para integrar o recém-publicado volume Graphis — Social and Political Protest Posters, com os cartazes Chernobyl (2011), International Year of Forest (2011) e Dia Nacional da Água (2004). Está também seleccionado para a próxima edição do Graphis — Poster Annual 2015, com os cartazes da série Save Me (2014), Truth Will Out (2015) e Cinanima (2015).

Among the Design Masters of Graphis, 2014
João Machado conquers once again several of the internationally renowned GRAPHIS distinctions, but this time with a novelty: in a manner of homage, and among five other great names of the design, he is elected Design Master. He is also invited to be part of the recently published volume Graphis – Social and Political Protest Posters, with the posters Chernobyl (2011), International Year of Forest (2011) and Dia Nacional de Água (National Water Day) (2004). He is also selected for the next edition of Graphis – Poster Annual 2015, with the posters from the series Save me (2014), Truth Will Out (2015) and Cinanima (2015).

Siza Vieira Design, 2013
No ano em que completa 80 anos, Siza Vieira vê a sua obra de design pela primeira vez reunida e publicada numa aplicação iPad e num livro, ambos com a assinatura gráfica do estúdio de João Machado. O desenho, a base de todo o trabalho do mais consagrado arquiteto português, apresenta-se numa aplicação para iPad, disponível na App Store desde abril de 2013, e de seguida também em livro, publicado pela Artebooks em fevereiro de 2015. Duas ferramentas ao dispor de arquitetos, alunos e seguidores da obra do primeiro Pritzker português e Leão de Ouro na Bienal de Veneza.

In the year of his 80th birthday, Siza Vieira sees his design work gathered and published for the first time in a iPad app and in a book, both with the graphic signature of João Machado’s studio. The drawing, the basis of all the work of the most renowned Portuguese architect, is presented in a iPad app, available at App Store since april 2013, followed by a book, published by Artebooks in february 2015. Two tools available to architects, students and followers of the work of the first Portuguese Pritzker and Gold Lion at the Venice Biennial.

Livro Premiado pela Graphis, 2012

João machado foi distinguido este ano na categoria Design/Books com um livro de filatelia para a editora Caleidoscópio. Foi ainda selecionado na categoria de Design/Poster Annual, com os cartazes Paixões e International Year of Forests.

Every year, since 1944 and worldwide, GRAPHIS invites renowned professionals from the visual communication industry, within the areas of graphic design, photography, advertising or illustration, to include in its annual excellence publication. João Machado was distinguished this year in the category Design/Books with a philately book for the publish house Caleidoscópio. He was also selected in the category Design/Poster Annual, with the posters Paixões (Passions) and International Year of Forests.

Duas exposições cruzam-se numa única, confrontando e fazendo dialogar dois universos criativos e, sob a riqueza desse diálogo, celebrando também a riqueza do design português.
Organizada pela ESAD/Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Matosinhos, pela Câmara Municipal de Matosinhos e pela Fábrica de Santo Thyrso, a exposição 1+1 DESIGN GRÁFICO João Machado + José Brandão tem lugar na Galeria Quadra, no Mercado Municipal de Matosinhos, de 7 de julho a 13 de outubro de 2012.
